  • A 6' tree will use 1 gallon of water every two days. Check the water level every day and keep your tree hydrated to prevent it from drying out.
  • Secure the tree with wire to keep it from tipping.
  • Keep tree at least three feet away from floor heaters, fire places, or other heat sources.
  • Use only UL-listed lights, and no more than 3 strands linked together.
  • Turn off the Christmas lights when you sleep, or if you leave your home for very long.
  • If you use an artificial tree, choose one that tested and labeled as fire resistant. Artificial trees with built-in electrical systems should have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label.
  • Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty lights, and a person touching a branch could be electrocuted.
  • Use only non-combustible or flame-resistant materials to trim a tree. Choose tinsel or artificial icicles of plastic or nonleaded metals.
  • Do not burn wrapping papers in the fireplace. A flash fire may result as wrappings ignite suddenly and burn intensely.
