A 6' tree will use 1 gallon of water every two days. Check the water level every day and keep your tree hydrated to prevent it from drying out.
Secure the tree with wire to keep it from tipping.
Keep tree at least three feet away from floor heaters, fire places, or other heat sources.
Use only UL-listed lights, and no more than 3 strands linked together.
Turn off the Christmas lights when you sleep, or if you leave your home for very long.
If you use an artificial tree, choose one that tested and labeled as fire resistant. Artificial trees with built-in electrical systems should have the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) label.
Never use electric lights on a metallic tree. The tree can become charged with electricity from faulty lights, and a person touching a branch could be electrocuted.
Use only non-combustible or flame-resistant materials to trim a tree. Choose tinsel or artificial icicles of plastic or nonleaded metals.
Do not burn wrapping papers in the fireplace. A flash fire may result as wrappings ignite suddenly and burn intensely.
